About Dr. Masters

Dr. Melissa Masters graduated from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013 after completing a bachelors in Animal & Dairy Science. Dr. Masters completed a Large Animal Medicine & Surgery Internship, with an emphasis in Production Animal Medicine following graduating while working with a local backgrounding yard. Dr. Masters then moved to Kansas and worked at a mixed animal practice that specialized in beef cattle medicine. Following that she worked at a mixed animal practice in Western Montana. Eventually Dr. Masters landed in the black hills and started her own practice and has been here ever since. When not working, Dr. Masters can be found riding her horses, playing with her children, or enjoying the great outdoors.

Dr. Masters has a special interest in equine lameness and reproduction, small animal surgery and emergency medicine, and herd health.

Fun Fact of the Week

Beware of Foxtail in your horses hay. Foxtail barbs embed in the gums and other soft tissues causing discomfort and eventually infection. The areas ulcerate and make it painful for the horse to eat or drink. This can eventually lead to signs of colic. Signs of foxtail issues include excessive drooling, oral discomfort (fighting the bit, not wanting to be haltered), reluctance to eat or drink, as well as a putrid odor coming from the mouth.

Be sure to check your horses hay prior to feeding it, it is commonly an issue with round bales that are harder to examine prior to feeding.

We recently moved to the Black Hills and have horses. When you have livestock. You hope you can find a good trustworthy Veterinary. We were very fortunate when we found Dr. Masters. From small animal to cows and horses she is very knowledgeable and takes extremely good care of them. She treats them like they are her own.

I highly recommend Masters Veterinary Services. We can always count on her when we call with a ranch emergency. She is kind, caring, and knowledgeable. I also like the way she explains everything while she is working on our horses. Her follow up is excellent and shows how much she cares.
